Where Should I Place My Philips Purifier?

This is a universal question. What we mean is that it doesn’t only relate to Philips air purifiers. It applies to all air purifiers.

The answer varies according to the design of the purifier. There are two prevalent designs currently in the market.

The first is the flat rectangular design. These usually have vents in the front and at the top. The front vents are for sucking the polluted air in while the top vent is for throwing out the purified air.

These devices can be safely kept against the wall. However, their location still needs to be somewhere in the middle of the room. If you put them in one corner, then the air in the opposite corner may not get purified fully, unless you have a very small room.

The other, more modern design is the tower. Its vents are located all around its body instead of just in the front. The vents for purified air remain at the top but they’re arranged in a circular format.

The benefit of this design is greater efficiency. The device can take in more air and push out more air which means that it purifies the room more quickly.

Further, the circular filters also don’t have edges like the flat ones do. This along with the more diffused intake of air also prevents dirty air from sneaking around the sides.

The flat air purifiers are designed to be kept against a wall while the round ones are supposed to be kept away from the wall.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t keep the tower air purifiers against the wall, though. It just means that by giving it clearance space all around it, you just make it more effective.

If you do have to place it next to the wall, make sure that you clean around and behind it regularly as dust can build up due to high-pressure suction of air through a small place.

How Long Does the Philips Air Purification Technology Last?

Multiple variables play a role here.

The first is the HEPA filter grade. The higher the grade of the HEPA filter, the higher its surface area will be.

This means that it will last longer.

Generally, the following estimates apply.

• H11 and H12 grade filters last about one year.
• H13 grade filters last 18 months.
• H14 grade filters can last upwards of two years.
• Combi filters normally perform somewhere between H13 and H14 grade HEPA filters.

However, it is important to remember that the working environment also plays a role. This means variables like:

• What the AQI is where you live – indoors and outdoors?
• What settings and fan speed you use your air purifier on?
• How often and long you keep your air purifier on?
• How well sealed your home is?
• How often and well you clean your pre-filter?

In the majority of cases, the estimates given by Philips for its devices are conservative. They will want you to change the filter the moment you get the alert.

However, you should see the alert as the beginning of the end of the filter. In other words, you don’t need to replace the filter but should expect your air purifier’s performance to steadily decline from the point that the device alerts you.

This means longer periods of high fan speeds and reduced air purification capability.

How Can You Clean Your Philips Air Purifier Filter?

Three things need to be cleaned in an air purifier.

The first is the machine itself and it is probably the easiest. As you use your device, you’ll find dust collecting near the vents.

1. Simply use a wet wipe or damp cloth to wipe the surface around the intake and output vents.
2. Make sure to open the panel and clean the insides too as dust collects there as well.
3. Remember to either air dry the surface you’ve wiped or wipe it with a dry cloth.

You’ll also have to regularly clean the pre-filter.

1. To do this, open the panel and take the pre-filter out.
2. First, shake and tap all the gathered dust loose.
3. Do this either in your bathroom or outside your home. There can be a considerable buildup on the pre-filter that can spread in your home.
4. It might be a good idea to wear a mask so as not to inhale this dust.
5. Once the pre-filter is tapped out, take it into the bathroom and clean it with water.
6. You can use a hand shower, a tap, or dip it in a tub.
7. Air-dry the pre-filter before returning it to the air purifier.

The third thing you’ll have to clean will be the sensor of the device. You’ll need to do this once every year or so. You’ll know the sensor is dirty and choked when the AQI indicator of your air purifier constantly stays in red.

This can be a little tricky because it is a small space and you don’t want to damage anything.

1. Locate and open the panel protecting the AQI sensor on the device.
2. It will be located on the side of the device and the panel will open sideways like a door. Don’t pull it out. It is not like the big panel protecting the filters.
3. Once open, use a wet wipe or small, wet rag to clean the insides.
4. Since the area is small, we recommend using a pair of tweezers. Wrap your wet wipe around the tip of the tweezers and wipe the insides of the sensor.
5. Turn on the air purifier. If the AQI monitor doesn’t stay frozen, you’ve done a good job. If it does, go back to the sensor and clean deeper.

This is the cheapest Philips air purifier you can get in India.

As a result, it also happens to be the simplest option available.

While many people often call bigger air purifiers portable, this one is the true portable device because of its super-compact profile.

In fact, it is because of its size that we think it is better suited as an accompaniment to the room air purifier than alone.

For instance, if you have an L-shaped room that your existing air purifier is unable to cope with then you can place this device in the far corner to boost purification efficiency.

Of course, you can also use it in a small room like a cubicle or home office (think as small as servant quarters). For example, you can take it with you to work if your stingy boss refuses to equip the office with an air purifier.

The small size means that this device’s CADR (that’s how much air it throws out every 60 minutes) is as low as 190 m3 per hour. This translates to this device being suitable for a room measuring 160 sq. ft.

The company says that it can handle a room as large as 234 sq. ft. but we find that hard to believe. You can probably manage to use it in a 200 sq. ft. room, though, but only if it is sealed properly.

As to how well it cleans, you cannot compare it to the company’s room air purifiers. Those devices, at least, have an H13 HEPA filter. This one only has an H12 and there’s a huge difference between the two.

You see, H12 grade HEPA filters can only purify up to 99.5% of particulate matter as small as 0.003 microns but H13 grade filters can manage as much as 99.97%.

That’s a difference of 0.47%. It doesn’t seem much but it is considerable as far as this technology goes. For perspective, the higher grade HEPA filters i.e., H14 and H15 are capable of 99.975% and 99.9975%.

Even so, if you have allergies and need a super-portable air purifier, then this device would suffice. It is, after all, certified by the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF).

Another feature of this device that is a result of its compactness is that there’s only one button. You’ll be using this button to choose different modes and perform all other functions of the device.

The available modes are Auto and Sleep. The Auto mode is closely connected to the AQI indicator. The indicator uses colors to show you the state of the air in the room.

The Auto mode uses this information to change the fan speed of the device. Be aware that when this device is operating at the highest fan speeds, it tends to get noisy.

There’s a filter indicator as well that will tell you when they need changing. Unfortunately, the filters are small which means that they need to be changed far more often than you would feel comfortable with.

Philips Air Purifier AC1217 and AC1215 are very similar devices. The Philips AC1217 is a more recent model and supposedly more advanced. However, this is not evident when you look deeper.

The Philips 1217 air purifier is not only more expensive than the Philips 1215 air purifier but it is also louder and less effective in terms of coverage area or air throwing power (CADR).

At the same time, you need to know that the difference between the AC1217 and AC1215 are so minor as to almost be negligible.

Therefore, if you’re being asked to choose between the two, we recommend the AC1215 but if you can only find the AC1217 then you shouldn’t avoid the purchase.

As it is, the Philips Air Purifier AC1215 is possibly the most purchased and widely used air purifier in India.

It also needs to be credited with giving Philips the air purifier market on a platter. This is the product that is the reason why Philips is a market leader in India.

In terms of all the Phillips air purifier prices in India, this one is likely to suit your specific requirements and restrictions best. In fact, it offers all the core functions of an air purifier at a price that falls sweetly in that financial bracket that is suitable for most middle-income families in the country.

This is why so many people ended up buying this product.

If you weren’t one of those people, then you would now think that this device is criminally simple, especially when compared to all the latest IoT-type offerings. However, when it comes to purifying air, this device does wonderfully well.

It is based on an H13 grade HEPA filter which is extremely efficient. Even though it is less efficient than an H14 grade HEPA filter, the difference is not big enough to merit much discussion.

You’ll often find this device described as a bedroom air purifier because of its size and capacity. It has a CADR of 270 m3 per hour which is just about right for a room measuring 250 sq. ft. With proper seals, you can probably push this to 300 sq. ft.

The AQI indicator on this device is color-coded ranging from red (bad) to blue (good). Unfortunately, at this price range, a numerical AQI display is not available in any product.

#1: AC2887 Philips Air Purifier

The Philips AC2887 air purifier was the most popular such device for medium-sized rooms in India for a long time.

While it wasn’t as popular as Philips’s iconic AC1215/20, it was still hugely successful in the Indian market.

It would have carried on being exceptional too, except Philips launched an improved version that has already started taking over the market.

We’ll be reviewing that product next but first, let’s do this one because it is more affordable than that one.

This device’s success is based on its suitability for the upper-middle-income bracket in the country. This suitability, of course, is a result of its price and its capacity which makes it good for slightly larger rooms.

Depending on the time of year and ongoing deals, you can get this device for anything between ₹15,000 and ₹20,000. In terms of room size recommendations, you’ll find this device to be more than a match for an area of 325 sq. ft.

For example, the company says that this device can purify a room measuring 216 sq. ft. in mere 10 minutes. Technically, this means that it should be able to purify a 325 sq. ft. room in 15 minutes but it does depend on how well-sealed the room is.

It will perform best in smaller rooms but if you seal the room properly, it can even serve you well in a room exceeding 400 sq. ft. All this, of course, is a result of its 333 m3 per hour CADR.

Its purification abilities are also decent because it is based on an H13 HEPA filter, backed by a pre-filter and an active carbon filter. While it lacks an H14 HEPA filter, we don’t think the difference between the two is significant enough.

In addition to its suitability for the upper-middle class of India, the success of this device was also because of its AeraSense monitors that show AQI of the room numerically and color codes.

The AQI monitor is connected to this device’s 3 smart pre-settings which target specific types of air pollutants. These pre-settings of General, Allergen, and Bacteria & Virus are essentially running modes. Depending on the mode you choose, the device will adjust its fan speeds to suit the AQI of the room.

In terms of features, this device was fully loaded for its time. The only feature it didn’t have was the child lock.

In today’s world, though, it lacks a key feature – WIFI and app connectivity – but that is something that Philips has remedied in their latest launch.

Like all Philips air purifiers, this one also comes with a 2-year international warranty.

Who’s it for: If you’re not looking for WIFI connectivity in your medium room air purifier and want everything else, this device will be perfect.

Launched in 2020, the Philips AC2958/63 air purifier is quickly becoming a favorite in the country.

In fact, we’ll stick our neck out and say that this is the best Philips air purifier with HEPA filter in the market toda.

The device is an improvement on the AC2887 in more ways than one.

For instance, with this device, Philips has shown its intent to move away from the flat, wall-hugging design to the tower design.

The tower air purifiers are cylindrical.

While the flat air purifiers take in air from vents in the front, tower air purifiers suck in air from all sides. In both designs, the purified air is released from vents at the top.

However, tower air purifiers tend to be considerably more efficient when it comes to purifying the air. They’re not only faster but also don’t have any blind spots as is the case with wall-hugging air purifiers.

Since tower air purifiers can process air faster, they have a higher Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) too. A higher CADR also means that the device can handle larger rooms despite a small footprint.

The AC2958/63 has a CADR of 380 and can handle a room as large as 425 sq. ft provided it is sealed properly. If your rooms aren’t sealed properly, buy this device for 375 or 400 sq. ft. Philips claims it is suitable for 484.3 sq. ft. but that is in lab-like conditions and hard to get in real life.

Another way that this device improves upon the previously famous model is its WIFI compatibility. Newer products from other brands were eating into the Philips market share precisely because of this feature.

However, the AC2958/63 can not only be connected to Philips’s smart app but is also compatible with Google Voice Assistant and Amazon Alexa. You’ll be able to change all settings and access various features with the app.

As to the rest of the device, nothing is off except for one minor issue. This is the fact that this device uses an H13 grade HEPA filter instead of the latest H14.

We think this is a minor issue because H14 doesn’t offer a significant improvement over the H13. The usual pre-filter and activated carbon filter are present too in the combi filter configuration, of course.

Unfortunately, because this device uses a combi filter, aftermarket replacement options for the same are not easily available. This means that you would spend more every time you have to replace the filter but that is the price you pay for cutting-edge technology.

At the same time, the combi filter will have a longer life span too. Philips says that it can last for as long as 3 years but that depends on your usage and how polluted your city is. If it is like Delhi NCR, expect a life of around 2 years but if it is a cleaner city then you can overshoot the 3-year estimate too.

In terms of using it, this device boasts of all the standard features. It has 4 modes – Auto, Sleep, Gentle, and Turbo. The Auto mode takes its cue from the incredibly accurate AQI monitor. The monitor will show you its findings numerically and via colors where red is extremely unhealthy while blue is purified.

This device also has a smart filter status indicator. This indicator evaluates and displays how much pollution the device has processed.

Being the newest and most advanced air purifier in the market, you shouldn’t be surprised that of all the Philips air purifiers, the price of this one is at the upper end. It is costly to buy but since its filters last a long time, it isn’t expensive to run.

Philips is also very good at supporting its customers. Like all their air purifiers, this one comes with a 2-year worldwide warranty.

It has a CADR of 400 m3 per hour which means that it can comfortably handle a room with an area of 475 sq. ft. provided it is sealed properly.

In lab-like conditions, it can manage 516 sq. ft. but if your room is leaky then it may not even be able to cope with 450 sq. ft.

The rest of this device is virtually identical to the one we reviewed earlier. For instance, like that one, this one is also based on an H13 HEPA filter within the combi filter configuration. The combi filter also incorporates a 3-layer pre-filter and an activated carbon filter.

Similarly, this device is WIFI enabled which means that you can use it with Philips’ smart app. It is also compatible with Google Voice Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

It has 4 modes which are Auto, Sleep, Gentle, and Turbo. The AQI sensor is very accurate and shows findings numerically and through colors.

Further, it has the smart filter status indicator that tracks and shows how much pollution the filters have already processed. This indicator will also tell you when to change the filters.

This is the largest device on Philips’s roster. It is intended for huge rooms of almost industrial proportions.

It has a CADR of 500 m3 per hour which translates to 645 sq. ft. in lab-like conditions.

Even in real-world conditions, though, this air purifier is a beast.

You can expect it to hold its own in rooms as large as 600 sq. ft. if they’ve been sealed properly. It should be able to handle unsealed rooms measuring 550 sq. ft. with ease.

It has a squarish tower design that boasts of “unique dual airflow”, as per the company. This dual airflow design does boost the CADR of the device but it isn’t as unique as the company says. Other air purifier brands are claiming the same thing.

There are other features that hint at this device’s semi-industrial personality. For example, it boasts of separate monitors for indoor air allergen, harmful gases, and PM 2.5.

The allergen indicator will show values ranging from 1 to 12 while the harmful gases will be shown on a scale of L1 to L4. The PM2.5 levels are shown numerically too. Additionally, the device’s display shows air quality by changing color.

The monitors are very accurate with the indicators showing values numerically and in color codes.

The combi filter inside this device is based on an H13 grade HEPA filter and includes a pre-filter and a carbon filter.

It is also approved to be allergy-friendly by the European Center for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF) and tested by Airmid for its capability against the H1N1 virus. Incidentally, if you didn’t know, coronavirus is considered to be similar to H1N1 in size.

There are 3 modes to choose from. These are General, Bacteria & Virus, and Allergen. All the features and modes of this device can be accessed through the Philips app once the device has been connected to the WIFI.

All these features, and especially its size, mean that this device is super expensive. However, it does allow you to purify a huge hall that would otherwise need two separate devices.

The biggest challenge with this device, though, isn’t its cost. It is the availability of its replacement filter. It’s not easily available even with the company and you can forget about aftermarket options.

Are HEPA Air Purifier Filters Necessary?

Did you know that HEPA air purifier filters are closely associated with the atom bomb? Yes, this is the same atom bomb that was used to level Hiroshima and Nagasaki to end the Second World War.

How? Do you ask?

Well, as the development of the bombs progressed during the Manhattan Project, researchers realized that small dust particles in the air were getting irradiated.

Naturally, these were proven to be harmful to the researchers. Therefore, the project needed a way to control these irradiated particles.

The precursor of the HEPA filter was developed to trap these particles and dispose of them in a safe manner. The filter was a derivation of the masks that US soldiers wore during the War to protect themselves from gas attacks.

In fact, the researchers not only developed the HEPA filter but also the first air purifier for the same reason. These early air purifiers were used in the American headquarters to keep the airborne irradiated particulate matter in check.

While the history lesson on HEPA is interesting, you’re probably asking why you need a HEPA air filter-based air purifier in India. After all, you don’t have any radioactive particulate matter in your home unless someone in your home loves gassy foods.

In a nutshell, HEPA filters are necessary because our air is now full of particulate matter of varying sizes. The bigger particles are tolerable since they’re trapped and held by your nose and throat. They never go deep into your lungs.

2. Further, every time there is a 10 µg/m³ increase of PM2.5, your chances of dying go up by 4%, your chances of developing heart-related problems rise by 6%, and your chances of getting lung cancer increase by 8%.
3. On the flip side, every time there is a 10 µg/m³ decrease of PM2.5, your life span goes up by 0.35 years (that’s just over three months).

According to scientists, PM2.5 causes damage in the lungs through free radical action and inflammation. The free radicals not only directly cause inflammation but also cause tissue damage and even affect cellular calcium concentrations.

The bottom line is this: HEPA air purifier filters are necessary because they filter out PM2.5 and smaller particulate matter from the air inside your home. The more you breathe in these small particles, the higher the chances of you getting sick and dying.

Can Air Purifiers Stop Covid19?

The answer to this question is a definitive “YES”. An air purifier with HEPA filter in India can be very effective against Covid19, especially in overpopulated areas. A recent report published in one of the most respected global journals Nature showed that HEPA filters along with ultraviolet sterilization can make a significant difference against airborne covid19 virus.

The study was conducted in a covid ward and a covid ICU. The scientists used air purifiers with HEPA and ultraviolet capabilities in both locations.

By monitoring the presence of the aerosol version of the virus on separate days, the scientists established that on the days that the air purifier was on, there were no viruses detected in the air.

On the days that the device was off, they detected the usual quantity of viruses in the air of the covid ward. It is worth pointing out that along with the covid19 virus, the scientists also saw a marked difference in other types of aerosol microorganisms such as bacteria.

In the ICU, the scientists didn’t notice a significant difference between days when the air purifier was on and when it was off. According to them, the reason is the already sterilized nature of the ICU and the fact that after the disease has progressed that far, viral replication is not as fast.

How Does an Air Filter of a Purifier Work and Why Should You Replace it Regularly?

HEPA or High-Efficiency Particulate Absorbing filters are, essentially, nets made up of extremely thin fibers. The difference is that the net is super-tight. The fibers are randomly arranged but very dense.

They are also pleated to increase the surface area through which the air has to pass through. This increases the efficiency of the filter because it improves its chances of trapping pollutants in a single pass.

The fibers in HEPA filters could be made up of any material but most of those found in air purifiers are based on synthetic substances such as nylon or polyester. Other materials that can be used include coarse glass fibers (Dyson), animal hair (bison), and even metal.

The intricate and dense nature of these fibers is the main reason why HEPA filters work so well. They work through three main mechanisms.

1. Impaction; where a particle hits the fiber and gets trapped or embedded because it is too big to fit through the space.
2. Interception; where a medium-sized particle has sufficient space to move through the fibers but gets too close to one and gets snagged.
3. Diffusion; where the particle is super small but still runs into the fibers because it is pushed around randomly by gas molecules in the air.

In a nutshell, your HEPA filter traps pollutants.

Activated carbon filters work by adsorbing gases, odors, and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in the air. In simple terms, the pollutant comes through the activated carbon filter and gets attached to the individual carbon molecules.

In effect, an air purifier with an activated carbon filter and a HEPA filter purifies the air by trapping contaminants. What this means is that all the pollutants in your room get stuck inside the purifier.

Therefore, when your air filters get saturated, they become unable to purify the air further. More importantly, when the filters are saturated, they can release these pollutants back into the air, not unlike what happens when you wash your AC or air purifier pre-filter.

So, if you don’t replace your air filters regularly, you’re risking more exposure to the same pollutants that you’re trying to protect yourself from.

How Long Does an Air Filter in Purifier Last?

Different types of air purifier filters have different life spans.

For instance, pre-filters are made to last a really long time. In fact, pre-filters never need to be replaced unless severely damaged. However, they need to be cleaned regularly which is when you have to be careful not to damage them.

HEPA and activated carbon filters can last anywhere between 6 to 24 months.

You’re probably wondering why we’re giving such a big range when air purifier manufacturers categorically state the time when their filters need to be changed.

Moreover, air purifiers themselves come equipped with mechanisms that alert you when it’s time to change the filters. There’s a catch with these manufacture recommendations and filter change alerts, however. The catch is the inherent conflict of interest.

The sooner you change the filters the better it is for the manufacturer because that way maximizes their profits.

By giving you a fixed life span for their air purifier filters, manufacturers also free themselves of the hassle of explaining how complicated it can be to figure out the life of air filters. We’ll make the attempt, though.

So, the life of your air purifier filter regardless of whether it is HEPA or activated carbon depends on multiple factors. Let’s see each factor individually.

Grade / Density:

This factor basically boils down to the quality of the filters.

In terms of activated carbon filters, this would mean how many carbon particles are in the filter and how well-activated it is. Carbon gets activated i.e., its molecular structure changes when a certain amount of heat is applied to it.

Further, the type of carbon used also matters. The highest quality activated carbon filters utilize carbon from purer sources, don’t have impurities, and are activated under standard conditions.

Such filters, obviously, last longer.

HEPA filters come in different grades. The latest air purifier models in the market right now use H14 grade HEPA filters which are the most advanced and the densest.

You’ll also find devices with H13 grade HEPA filters simply because their manufacturers haven’t upgraded their systems yet. The older models, of course, will be based on H11 or H12 grade HEPA filters.

The densest HEPA air filters last the longest which is why the latest air purifier models with H14 grade HEPA filters say that their air filters will last for two years. The models that have been around a while and are using H13 grade HEPA filters claim a life of about 12 to 18 months while the oldest models say 6 to 12 months.

So, the higher grade a HEPA filter will last longer.

The design of the filters also matters. For instance, the circular combi-filters almost always last longer than the flat, separate filters.

Usage:

The life of the filter will also depend on how you use the air purifier.

This is simply a matter of how much air you’re pushing through the filter. The more you push through, the quicker the filter will get dirty and become unusable.

In practical terms, this means two things.

The first is how long you run the air purifier every day i.e., hours and the second is how hard you run it i.e., fan speeds.

The more you run it at higher speeds, the quicker it will need to be changed.

Pollution Levels:

Pollution levels will play a role too.

The higher the pollution levels, the more pollutants the filter will have to manage, and the quicker it will get dirty.

Since pollution levels vary from day to day and month to month, the speed with which the filter loses its life is not uniform either.

However, what you should know is that when we say “pollution levels”, we aren’t only talking about outdoor pollution. We’re also referring to indoor pollution. This includes everything from cooking and cleaning to the use of incense and perfumes.

State Of the Pre-Filter:

The pre-filter is there to block PM10 from reaching the carbon or HEPA filter.

The cleaner it is the better it will protect the finer filters.

This is why we recommend cleaning the pre-filter at least every 10 days if not every week. If you do this then the activated carbon and HEPA filters will last longer.

How To Make Your Filter for Air Purifier Last Long

So, if you clean your pre-filter regularly, then your activated carbon and HEPA filters will last longer.

However, how long will depend on how regularly and how well you clean your pre-filters.

We suggest vacuuming the pre-filter, dusting it outside, and then washing it with soap water to have the maximum impact on the life of your other filters.

Apart from cleaning your pre-filter regularly, there are other things you can do to increase the life of your air purifier filters too. These are.

Keeping Your Doors and Windows Shut

Some people feel that they need to open their doors and windows once a day. The habit comes from times when opening doors and windows meant getting fresh, clean air. However, maintaining the habit when conditions have clearly reversed isn’t advisable.

People who do this also say that they shut their air purifiers off when they do. What they don’t understand is that the purifier has purified the air in their homes already. By allowing this air to escape in lieu of polluted air, they’re asking their devices to do the work all over again.

Whether you turn off your purifier or not before opening your doors and windows, you’re putting more pressure on the filters in the air purifier.

In contrast, if you were to keep the doors and windows shut then your device will find it easier and your filters will last longer.

Sealing The Doors and Windows

Even if you keep your doors and windows shut, some of the purified air in your rooms will still escape because homes are not designed to be air-tight. However, you can minimize the escape of purified air by sealing the space between the doors or windows and their frames.

Your home still won’t be air-tight but it will be better sealed which will make your air purifiers more efficient.

This is easier for people who live in modern homes with UPVC doors and windows. The reason for this is that UPVC doors and windows already have rubber linings.

In fact, you won’t need to install rubber linings if you live in a home with UPVC doors and windows. However, you will have to seal the bottom i.e., the space between the UPVC door and floor. The fitters leave a gap there so that the doors don’t get stuck.

It is also important to add that you use different items to seal windows and doors. With doors, you’ll have to prevent the air from escaping by getting door seals for the bottom of the door. With windows, you’ll need a foam or rubber lining.

We’ll deal with both these options one by one.

Door Seals

Door seals are what you use to block the space between the door and the floor while keeping the door functional.

Your local hardware store will have these door seals.

Before you go to them, though, measure the width of your doors so that you can have them cut the seals to the right size.

We also advise asking the store owner for someone to install the seals. While installing these seals is as easy as screwing it in, it does require some strength so you’ll be better off with a professional.

If you don’t want to go to the hardware store, these types of door seals are available online also. In fact, you’ll have a greater variety to choose from if you buy online. The only catch is that you’ll either have to install them yourself or call a carpenter to do the job.

As to what options you’ll have, there are three main types.

The Metal Strip Door Seal with Brush Bristles

The first is the standard metal strip that has a channel at the bottom. In the channel, another strip of brush bristles is inserted. This type of door seal is always screwed into the door.

On Amazon, it is available under the Deco Window brand. Locally, you’ll find other brands but the pricing may be slightly higher.

All Rubber Door Seal

The second is an all-rubber door seal that you won’t even have to screw in. It is adhesive-based and can simply be stuck to the bottom of the door.

The only problem with this door seal is that it may not last a long time.

Since it is a single-piece seal, every time you will open or shut the door, the part touching the floor will drag and put pressure on the entire thing.

This can cause the adhesive to fail. However, if installed properly i.e., the contact point is clean, uniform, and wide enough, even this will not happen.

As it is, this is the most streamlined and simple option available currently. The best product we’ve found of this type is offered by Metreno.

Foam-Based Door Seal

The third variety is the simplest to install. It is made up of synthetic material with cylindrical holes on two sides.

You have to slide this seal under your door, cut the excess away, and then insert foam cylinders into the two cylindrical holes.

Apart from how easy it is to install; its other great quality is that it is washable.

You simply take it out, wash it, and put it back again.

This kind of door seal is not available in most local stores. So, you’ll only be able to buy it online.

Window Linings

Window linings are mainly needed for homes that have wooden doors and windows.

They are pasted in the gap between the window and the frame around it. They come in rolls that can be snipped to fit different dimensions.

You can get them from your local hardware stores but their availability depends on how big or well-stocked a particular store is. Again, you’ll have more options if you shop online.

While you’re buying these, make sure to pay attention to the thickness of the lining as well as its width. Both will play a role in how well your window opens and closes.

The two best options we’ve found are the G-Charge Single Side High Density Self Adhesive Foam Seal Tape and the amiciCare Dust and Noise Insulating Form Self-Adhesive Doors Windows Rubber Gap Sealing Tape.

The G-Charge option is thicker while the amiciCare option is longer. Choose according to your specific requirements.

Avoiding Indoor Air Pollution

While all the above steps will help you keep outside pollution from entering your home, if you truly want to extend the life of your air purifier filter, then you’ll also have to take indoor air pollution into account.

Most statistics about indoor air pollution cite incredible medical drawbacks and focus on the use of solid fuels like wood, coal, or even dung cakes. This is why they don’t apply to owners of air purifiers like you.

However, even though indoor air pollution isn’t going to cause massive health problems for you, it will still impact the life of your air purifier filter. This is even though you won’t be using solid fuels.

You see, even something as simple as cooking can cause indoor air pollution.

Studies in India and Asia haven’t focused on indoor air pollution being caused by gas and electricity-based cooking. Therefore, we need to look at studies from the western world. The California Air Resources Board has conducted multiple studies of the kind of cooking that we’re considering here.

It clearly states that cooking not only generates air pollution from the fuel being used but also from the food being cooked.

For instance, the Board says that using a gas-fueled stove can result in the release of harmful pollutants like carbon monoxide and formaldehyde. We use LPG and CNG, so this applies to us.

Similarly, the Board says that even oils, fats, and other food items create unhealthy air pollutants especially when cooked at high heat. Indian food specifically makes use of a lot of oil, frying, sauteing, and spice tempering which is why this applies to us twice as much.

The only way to prevent indoor pollution caused by cooking is to use a chimney with a proper hood or to avoid cooking at high temperatures.

Moreover, Indians also tend to use incense during prayers, believing that this smoke purifies the home. Scientifically speaking, this doesn’t make sense because they’re expecting smoke to purify the home.

However, even if you don’t want to look at it scientifically, nowhere in the scriptures does it say that you need incense to feel close to God. The blessings from prayers to God are not dependent on incense.

Therefore, apart from using a chimney and cooking at low heat, not using incense is another thing you can do to prolong the life of your air purifier filters.

How Will You Know That You Need an Air Purifier Filter Replacement?

To know when you need replacement air purifier filters, you need to watch for three signs.

The obvious sign is the filter change alert from your air purifier.

Don’t worry about being too late for the change.

You can continue to run the air purifier even though it is giving you the filter change alert.

In fact, some people even make the alert go away and use the purifier until the next time the alert comes up.

Most filter change alerts are based on a basic timer i.e., they light up after a previously coded number of hours have elapsed. Many don’t even take into account the air quality in the room or even the speed at which the purifier was run.

Therefore, it is fairly safe to continue to use an air purifier filter through two different alerts. However, if you’re not going to listen to the air purifier, we recommend doing your own assessment.

This means keeping an eye out for the other two signs that you need a replacement air purifier filter.

The first is the appearance of the air purifier filter itself. When you get the filter change alert from your device, shut it off, and take the filter out.

You need to take it out of your home and gently tap it to get rid of the excess dust. Make sure you’re wearing a mask so that you don’t breathe in the PM2.5 particles.

Once you’ve done this very basic maintenance, look at the filter. If it is all black and there are no white strands or portions visible, then you need to change it. However, if you can see light (white strands) in the midst of all that darkness, then you can check for the third sign.

The third sign is the most sure-shot way to know that you need replacement air purifier filters. This is how quickly your air purifier can purify the air in your room.

As you use your air purifier, you’ll get a sense of how fast or slow it can purify the room’s air at different AQI levels. This sense will serve you well when it comes to figuring out if you need replacement air purifier filters.

An air purifier with an older filter will take longer to clean the air in the room than if it had a new filter.

Moreover, if the filter is really saturated then the air purifier can fail too. For instance, many people say that once their filters became old their air purifiers couldn’t bring down the room’s AQI below 50. This is common enough for you to consider it to be proven.

We think you shouldn’t change your air purifier filter without all three signs being visible.

There are multiple reasons for this.

• The first is that many manufacturers rely on the quick sale of air purifier filters to boost their profits.
• Another is that there’s no way for them to devise an alert system that will take into account everything from varying AQI levels, run speeds, run times, and even passive accumulation of PM2.5

There’s a lot that can go wrong if you don’t change your air purifier filters after they’ve lost their functionality.

Other, smarter people go online to buy their replacement air purifier filters. However, the majority of these people search for replacement air filters by their device model.

This often results in mistakes because the search results are not always flawless. It is common for eCommerce websites and search engines to deliver “close” results instead of accurate ones.

Therefore, if you’re not careful you can end up buying the wrong filter model. The best way to avoid this is to open up your device and check the model code or number on the filter itself.

Should You Always Buy a Branded Replacement Filter for your Air Purifier?

When you search for a replacement air purifier filter with model code, your results will often include aftermarket, third-party, or “compatible” options.

Depending on what your preferences are, this can be a great opportunity or a bullet that needs to be dodged.

Air purifier filters are generally not patented. Patents only come into the picture if the original filter was modified in some way as is the case with Coway and Honeywell air purifiers. Coway has modified and patented its HEPA filters while Honeywell has done the same for its carbon filters.

If your device uses a patented filter, then you won’t be able to find aftermarket replacements and will have to rely on the company to get your filters. However, you can look for these filters online and still save a tiny sum.

Most air purifiers, though, neither feature patented nor combi filters. You’ll find plenty of aftermarket alternatives for these kinds of filters. However, this opportunity comes with a catch.

What If You Can’t Find a Replacement Air Filter for your Purifier?

This is the biggest issue with air purifiers in India.

You do elaborate research to find the air purifier that is perfect for your home. For the next year or two, you even enjoy the fruits of your labor.

The only problem is that now that you need a replacement air purifier filter, you can’t find them anywhere.

You’ve checked online as well as with the company and they’ve told you that they aren’t available. You’ve even escalated the issue to senior management in the company and finally got them to admit that they don’t make the replacements anymore.

So, what can you do now?

You can’t simply ditch the air purifier and buy a new one. Not only would all the money you spent on the first one go waste but you’ll have to spend even more on the new one. And, who can say that that device’s filters won’t be discontinued too?

While, in the long term, you will have to write off the original sum and invest in a new device from a more mainstream manufacturer, in the short term, you do have some options open to you.

In this section, we’ll explore these options.

Repurposing Another Device’s Replacement Air Purifier Filter

If the manufacturer has stopped making air purifier filters for your particular device’s model, then you should always be able to find filters that will fit your device even though they’re from other manufacturers.

The only hitch with doing this would be clashing dimensions. Air purifier manufacturers deliberately vary their filters’ dimensions so that customers are compelled to buy replacements from them.

Unfortunately, they don’t take into account a situation where a customer is not able to buy replacement filters from them even though he wants to because they discontinued production.

As a customer, your only option in this scenario is to DIY other companies’ filters to fit your device. You can do this in two ways.

One is to fit a larger filter into your device and the other is to pad up a smaller filter into the bigger space.

If you want to fit a larger filter into your device then you’ll have to make sure that the discrepancy in dimensions is small. The reason for this is that you cannot cut into the pleats of the HEPA filter or the chambers of the carbon filter.

Cutting the pleats would reduce the efficiency of the HEPA filter while breaking the chambers of the carbon filter will cause the activated carbon particles to fall out.

What you can slice is the foam padding that most filters come with. The foam is there to ensure a tight fit and prevent air leakage. However, you can afford a little bit of leakage since the other option would be to discard the device itself.

If you don’t want leakage either, you can always get a relatively smaller filter and pad it with more foam. Simply shape and fix foam lining around the sides of the filter. As we mentioned earlier in this guide, foam lining is easily found in local hardware stores and on the internet. We’ve even linked out to them.

How to Clean Air Purifier Filter?

It’s not recommended that you clean your old air purifier filter. There are many reasons for this but two matter most.

The first is that when you clean your old and saturated air purifier filter, you’re exposing yourself to very fine pollutants that can get into your respiratory system and cause mayhem.

The second is that there’s no foolproof way of cleaning old air purifier filters. While you can get some functionality back from activated carbon filters, it is almost impossible with HEPA filters.

At the same time, if you can’t find replacement filters for your particular air purifier model and can’t even repurpose similarly sized alternatives, then you really don’t have any option but to clean the one that you have.

At the very least, this will return 25% to 50% of your air purifier’s capabilities to you. So, how can you clean your old air purifier filters?

Here are the steps for cleaning your old air purifier HEPA filter and your old carbon filter.

HEPA Filter

HEPA filters in air purifiers are very delicate. Moreover, they’re pleated so that the fabric can trap extremely fine pollutants. It is because of these two reasons that cleaning HEPA filters is not recommended.

The fine pollutants are trapped by the pleats so well that you can’t get rid of them without messing with the fabric. However, the moment you mess with the fabric, you take away the trapping capabilities of the filter.

Therefore, you want to clean the HEPA filter so you can reuse it but the act of cleaning it makes it impossible to reuse it.

This is the dilemma.

The only thing you can do is walk the knife’s edge.

Clean as much of the HEPA filter as you can without damaging its purifying capabilities. So, before we give you the procedure to follow, we would like to caution you to be VERY GENTLE at each and every step.

1. Vacuuming:
   1. Wear a mask and take the HEPA filter out of your air purifier.
   2. Take the filter outdoors to avoid releasing pollutants in your home.
   3. Use the fabric tool of your vacuum cleaner to gently remove all the loose dust particles.
   4. Be aware that after the deed is done, you’ll see some stretched and pulled fibers, especially if you used high speeds. There’s not much you can do about this as cleaning HEPA filters will damage them to some extent.
   5. If you don’t have a vacuum cleaner or don’t want to use one, you can try gently tapping the HEPA filter to loosen and remove all the dust particles.
2. Wiping:
   1. Get a soft cleaning rag.

(Note: We recommend using microfiber towels. All other fabrics like cotton and wool can trap and pull the fibers of your HEPA filter. This will ruin its structural integrity. If you can’t or don’t want to get microfiber rags, make sure the cloth you choose is very old and very smooth.)

• Wet the rag and squeeze out excess water, leaving it damp.
• Gently wipe the exposed surfaces of the HEPA filter.

(Note: Don’t try to penetrate the pleats too much. This can cause holes and gaps. Many times, you won’t even see them because they’re so minuscule but PM2.5 pollutants will still get through them.)

• Make sure to clean the rag at regular intervals or you’ll only be redistributing the dust.
• Drying:
  • Place the HEPA filter on a flat, clean, and dry surface to dry.
  • It needs to be flat to prevent the sagging of the pleats.
  • Don’t place the HEPA filter in the sun or the fabric may dry too quickly and puff up affecting the pleats.
• Washing: This step is the most damaging to the HEPA filter. Therefore, we only recommend trying it if your HEPA filter is still super-dirty. In fact, some experts even say washing a HEPA filter will always result in increased airflow but reduced purification capability.
  • Place your HEPA filter under cold, running, and gentle water.
  • Move it around to expose all the areas of the filter.
  • Gently wipe away excess water.
  • Place on a dry, flat surface to air dry.
  • Don’t place under the sun.

Carbon Filter

Compared to HEPA filters, carbon filters are relatively easy to clean and re-use.

The purpose of carbon filters is to capture harmful gases, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), and bad odors. The activated carbon particles inside the filter are the key to this.

Activated carbon particles are essentially super-heated carbon particles. Due to exposure to heat, their molecular structure changes a little, allowing them to bond with gases of various kinds.

These molecular bonds, however, are very weak. It only takes a little bit of sun to break them. Therefore, if you place the carbon filter in the sun for 6 to 12 hours, the bonds break, and the impure gases are released into the atmosphere.

Before that, we do recommend gently vacuuming it because some dust always escapes through the pre-filter and gets trapped in the carbon filter.

Understanding Dyson Air Technology

You know, how IKEA stands for customizable and affordable furniture and how Apple stands for user experience? Dyson stands for truly multifunctional technology that works efficiently for the home.

A Dyson air purifier is not just an air purifier, it is an air purifier as well as an air multiplier in one. And that’s just the Dyson Cool link tower.

The Dyson Hot + Cool air purifier is an air purifier, a heater, and an air multiplier in one.

Dyson believes that you could use three standard products in your home to perform three separate jobs or use one good one that melds these three functions efficiently.

And, ‘efficiently’ is the key here. You see, creating a piece of product that has two separate functions is easy but to do it synergistically is the difficult part.

To understand what this means, let’s break down how the Dyson air purifier works.

360-Degree Glass Dyson HEPA Air Filter

Dyson air purifiers have a tower design.

There are primarily two types of designs in air purifiers: the tower and the flat type.

The flat type goes against the wall, and the tower design is meant for larger, non-clearly defined spaces with a lot of air channels.

In the tower design, the air is taken into the air purifier from the base from all sides i.e., 360-degrees. The air that is taken in then passes through the glass HEPA filter from Dyson.

HEPA stands for ‘High-Efficiency Particulate Air’ filtration. It is a mechanical form of filtration that utilizes the movement of the air through the filter surface to trap suspended particulate matter instead of relying on chemical or electrical processes.

The HEPA filter is made of densely packed paper with randomly distributed fibers that catch the pollutants like a sieve. This is why the efficiency of any HEPA filter lies in its pleats and folds.

The larger the surface area of the filter the more potential there is for trapping harmful pollutants in the air. The Dyson air purifier HEPA filter is pleated over 200 times and ensures that 99.95% of particles as small as PM 0.1 are removed from the air. Moreover, it is peppered with borosilicate to further enhance its efficacy.

Also, the carbon filter is TRIS coated. The coating allows it to absorb harmful gases like formaldehyde more effectively and also extends its life.

Air Multiplier Technology

So, the air gets pulled into the air purifier by the impeller, passes through the glass HEPA filter, and rather than being thrown out into the room is projected into the annular loop. The loop is the hallmark of Dyson’s air purifier design.

This is where the magic happens. The small curvature in the opening of the air purifier’s loop works in the same way that the wing curvature of an aircraft does.

While the wing curvature causes the airplane to take off, the curvature of the opening of the air purifier’s loop creates negative air pressure. This negative air pressure then draws more air from the surrounding areas.

The effect is that the airflow goes up by about 16 – 18 times! This is the air multiplier technology and it results in a cool gentle breeze of purified air rather than the choppy slapping of a fan.

In this manner, the air purifier also works as a very safe bladeless fan for your home.

The loop is oscillating of course so the direction of the airflow can be manipulated as per convenience. And it is much easier to clean than a standard blade fan.

The Dyson Hot + Cool air purifier boasts of the added heating function. Within the loop are positive temperature coefficient ceramic plates that get heated up to your desired temperature.

As a result, the air is heated within the loop before being projected out. The plates stop conducting electricity after a particular temperature to avoid any chances of overheating. 

Effective Monitoring

That is the purifying and the air projection functions. But to clean effectively the device has to be able to monitor the air quality effectively too.

Accurate monitoring allows air purifiers to adjust and recalibrate their function to suit the changing AQI in the room.

Think of it this way. An air purifier that does not adjust to the changing air quality in the room and continues working at one set mode not only consumes more power but can be detrimental to the room’s air quality.

For instance, such an air purifier will continuously stir up unwanted air currents in the room that may kick up the settled particulate matter.

Why Are Air Purifiers from Dyson So Expensive?

What makes an air purifier expensive?

In fact, what makes any product expensive?

The first and foremost factor should be that it’s highly effective at doing what it’s aimed to do.

Meaning if you are looking at an air purifier then it should be really effective at cleaning the air of pollutants, particulate matter, and harmful gases.

Also, it should be consistent performance-wise.

Customers would like that the air purifier performs effectively not just in lab conditions but also in real-world scenarios. And real-world conditions are constantly changing so the performance has to be dynamic and adaptive to ever-changing situations.

For an air purifier, this would mean that it performs consistently in cleaning the air under different and ever-changing AQIs.

Secondly, you could look at the level of technology in the product. The better and more advanced the technology, the higher the price of the product. If there is more than one technology, that could also increase the price of the product as well.

The Dyson air purifiers have a tower design. Tower design air purifiers have round-shaped HEPA filters as opposed to the flat types. This means that air is drawn uniformly across the surface of the HEPA filter. In flat-type air purifiers, the air is usually drawn in from side channels.

Another factor to consider when you’re dealing with particulate matter, it really does not matter how well you catch them unless you can keep them there. Any caught particulate matter, dust or mites or mold spores can escape easily if the product is not a ‘sealed system’.

A lot of the air purifiers on the market, even though will promise you removal of 99.99% particulate matter, will often lack this sealed system. Any caught allergens or microbes can readily escape back into the indoor air and can be the cause of allergies and breathing difficulties.

Further, depending on which Dyson air purifier model you choose, you will always get more than one product technology.

Defying Conventional Testing Standards

What Is CADR?

CADR stands for ‘Clean Air Delivery Rate’.

It is an industry-standard test that gives its results in terms of CFM or Cubic Feet per Minute.

An air purifier with CADR of 300 delivers 300 cubic feet of clean air per minute. Therefore, the higher the CADR the higher the efficacy of an air purifier.

Why Dyson Air Purifiers Don’t Show CADR?

Dyson air purifiers do not reflect a CADR rating as Dyson does not test its air purifier’s CADR. The company believes that CADR is an ineffective measure of how well an air purifier will perform out of lab scenarios.

There are a few reasons for this too.

For example, CADR is measured in a small empty chamber. There are fans above to circulate the air and the test runs for 20 minutes at the highest speed available for the particular air purifier being tested. However, there are a few drawbacks to conducting this test.

• Firstly, the chamber is way too small to be even close to the size of a normal room.
• Secondly, the small testing time is unindicative of how well the air purifier performs in the long run.
• Thirdly, the air purifier’s CADR is measured only at full speed.

This means that at lower speeds it may not deliver the reflected CADR at all. Further, there is just one sensor measuring the AQI, and CADR only tests for three things: dust, pollen, and tobacco smoke.

However, there are many other types of pollutants in the indoor air and often VOCs are found in dangerously high levels indoors.

Dyson’s POLAR Test

While the air purifier technology has improved significantly since the first air purifiers hit the market, the standard test for comparing them hasn’t.

As a result, the CADR test was developed in the 1980s and continues to be the benchmark even today.

To tackle the drawbacks of measuring the performance of an air purifier by its CADR, The POLAR test was developed by Dyson scientists in 2018.

POLAR stands for ‘Point Loading and Auto Response’ test. This test evaluates accurately the true performance of an air purifier in a real home-like setting.

It differs from the CADR in several respects.

• First of all, in this test, the chamber size is much larger than the one used for CADR tests. It compares to an average-sized room and does not have any fans on the ceiling or walls.
• The air purifier is not placed in the center of the room and is instead placed on the side. With these settings in place, we can see the true performance of a purifier in conditions that accurately imitate real-world scenarios.
• The air quality is tested with 9 different sensors that are distributed around the room.
• Further, the sensors test for 5 types of particles and 11 gases as opposed to just 3 particles as in the case of CADR. The sensors spread across the room challenge and test the air purifier’s capability to not only purify the whole room but also to detect AQI accurately.

After all, if the air purifier cannot detect subtle changes in AQI accurately then how will it effectively purify the air on its AUTO setting? Which is what most of the users rely on. This Dyson air purifier is an upgrade on the Cool Link tower and comes with everything that the Dyson company stands for and then some.

The first and foremost upgrade is the HEPA filter itself. Like the previously reviewed model, this one also promises to remove 99.95% of the pollutants as small as 0.1 microns.

However, this model specifically mentions that its HEPA filter is H-13 grade. Combine that with the patented TRIS coated carbon filter and you have a combination that effectively cleans the indoor air of particulate matter, pollutants, gasses as well as dust mites, and mold spores. Odors are very effectively removed with this machine as well.

The sensor automatically senses and displays four parameters in AQI: PM2.5, PM10, VOCs, and NO2. This data is available in the Dyson Link App and is updated every 12 seconds.

Further, the detected AQI is also displayed on the machine in a 24-hour graph in real-time. This feature is not available with the previously reviewed model.

Another improvement over the Dyson Cool Link tower is that here you can customize the oscillation of the air projection to up to 350 degrees as opposed to 90 degrees.

This feature will be particularly helpful in irregularly shaped rooms where the purifier may not be placed in the exact corner but somewhat in the center of the room. L-shaped and T- shaped rooms particularly benefit from this feature. 

There is a diffused airflow setting that redirects the air out the back and does not produce a draft of air in the room. This setting just purifies the air without cooling the room. A much-needed feature for the Indian setting where the pollution is highest in the winter months.

There are 10 speed settings in this model too that are accessible from the Dyson Link App. There is a sleep mode that dims the display for light sleepers and detects and purifies air in a quieter setting.

Another major upgrade with this model is that on the whole this product has been designed to be 20% quieter than its previous model. There were some complaints with the earlier model of there being too much noise at higher fan settings, with this one, there’s none.

Everything good is still there such as the sealed system, voice control with Alexa, and google home integration along with remote control option as well.

The magnetized remote control still sits pretty on the machine, you will never lose it. But we don’t understand why in this one the cord length is slightly shorter. Perhaps this one is not meant to be moved around so much.

Nevertheless, it is certified allergy and asthma-friendly and comes with a 2-year warranty. It also comes in a variety of colors like white/silver, black/nickel, and an Iron/blue color combination. Take your pick.

Dyson is not called the master of manipulating air for nothing. Still, the most important part of this product remains the air purifying technology, so let’s talk about that.

The best part about Dyson products is that they never cut corners. Every product houses its best technology. So even with the Dyson Hot and Cool purifier, the air purification is done with the patented H-13 grade 360-degrees glass-sealed HEPA filters accompanied with the TRIS-coated carbon filter. This is the most advanced grade of HEPA filtration and effectively cleans the room of 99.95% of particles up to 0.1 microns.

With the air quality and purity sorted, let’s turn our attention to how it fares as a room heater. Often, when we try to use a room heater and an air purifier at the same time, their individual effects of each end up minimizing the total overall effect.

The total overall effect we are looking for is absolutely purified as well as heated air that is consistently distributed throughout the room while consuming the least amount of power. That’s called efficiency.

However, what ends up happening is that in most cases the air purifier is projecting the air upwards. And the heater is also projecting the air upwards, as warm air rises. This creates pockets of air in the room that are neither clean nor warm. Meaning there is inconsistency.

These plates stop conducting electricity as they reach the higher desired temperature, so there is absolutely no fear of overheating.

Further, the warm air is properly circulated throughout the room so that there are no cold pockets and the entire room is heated faster. When technologies are in sync there is an efficient use of power.

The air purification system of the Dyson Air Purifier (Hot and Cold) works without the heating as well. In the summer months when the heating function is not required, the bladeless fan works well to cool the air and if you do not require a draft of air, just put it on the diffused mode.

All the features that you will find in a standard Dyson air purifier are still there. It is Wi-Fi enabled and displays AQI reports in the Dyson Link App. It can be scheduled from the app as well.

There is a sleep mode, 10-speed settings, and it is voice-activated as well as remote-controlled. There is a display on the unit that displays in real-time the AQI levels in the form of a graph. Finally, it is certified allergy and asthma-friendly and comes with a two-year warranty.

Who’s it for: If you have a well-sealed space, are a fan of clean air, and often require room heating there is simply no other product on the market that can perform both functions with more ease and efficiency.

CADR stands for Clean Air Delivery Rate. It is usually measured in terms of cubic meters per hour and depicts the volume of air that the device can deliver every hour.

ACH stands for Air Changes per Hour and denotes how many times the air purifier will completely process the air in a given room in 60 minutes. If you combine the CADR value of a device with your room size, you should be able to come up with the ACH of the device, specifically for your room.

This is the important bit. If you know the length, breadth, and height of your room, you should be able to figure out how effective the device is going to be for you. Here’s how you can go about doing this.

1. Figure out the length, breadth, and height of your room and multiply the values.
2. Remember the CADR value is in m3/hour so you cannot calculate your room’s volume in cubic feet.
3. You either figure out its dimensions in meters or convert cubic feet to cubic meters.
4. Divide the given CADR with the volume you’ve just calculated. This will give you the ACH value of your device for your room.
5. If you want to take it one step further, divide 60 with your room’s ACH value. This will give you the amount of time your device will take to purify your room’s air one time.

This calculation isn’t flawless, however. The problem is that the numbers will only work if your room is air-tight. It isn’t, though, is it? So, you need to compensate for all the leakages.

To do this, we recommend either halving the ACH value or doubling the amount of time the device will take to purify your room one time.

HEPA Filter Grade

The job of the HEPA filter in your air purifier is to remove small particles from the air.

When it comes to air purifiers in India, the most advanced ones have H14-grade HEPA filters. These filters can remove up to 99.995% of pollutants as small as 0.3 microns.

The most commonly used grade of HEPA filter is H13 and it can remove up to 99.95% of pollutants measuring 0.3 microns.

However, some older air purifier models may have even lower grade HEPA filters such as H12 (99.5%) and H11 (95%).

The higher-grade HEPA filters are essentially denser which means that they don’t allow air to move through as easily as lower-grade HEPA filters do. Therefore, air purifiers with higher grade HEPA filters tend to have lower CADR values than those with a lower grade HEPA filter.

However, in practice, the different grades of HEPA filters don’t make that much of a difference.

Higher grade HEPA filters will allow less air to pass through but will pick out more pollutants than lower grade HEPA filters. In contrast, lower grade filters will allow more air to pass through which means that they’ll be able to process all the air in the room much faster.

Effectively, it will all boil down to very little difference. At the same time, if you’re going to be buying a new expensive device, it is much better to go with the latest technology even though the improvement it provides is minuscule.

Replacement Filter Availability

This is an extremely important aspect of air purifiers that most people fail to take into account when buying their devices. They simply don’t look that far ahead.

This aspect is so crucial because it determines the longevity of your device. The logic is simple.

Moreover, if you can’t find replacement filters easily then you’ll end up paying far more for the ones that are available than is justifiable.

Sharp’s air purifiers stand out of the crowd because of their unique ionization technology and this is true for the FP-J40M-W too.

The company incorporates Plasmacluster technology in all its air purifiers.

The Plasmacluster technology is different from other ionization technologies seen in the industry because it doesn’t produce ozone as a byproduct.

Sharp’s Plasmacluster technology manages to use ionization without creating ozone because it generates both negative and positive ions. As a result, instead of producing ozone, it produces water molecules.

Their devices also have great passive purifications systems based on combi-filters that combine a pre-filter, an activated carbon filter, and a HEPA filter. The HEPA filter component of their combi-filters is H14 grade too, making them the most advanced in the industry.

The combi-filter configuration also ensures a longer life span. Sharp’s filters can last for up to two years. The direct result of their extended life is that these filters are more expensive than the replacement filters of other competing air purifiers.

Availability isn’t an issue either as the company stocks them at most of their service centers. At the same time, aftermarket replacement filters will be harder to find for Sharp’s air purifiers.

Coway may be a South Korean brand but this product is still counted among the top air purifiers in India. They claim to have the “World’s Largest R&D Center” with close to 250 experts.

They back the claim up with award-winning air purifiers too. Take the AirMega 150 for example.

This device has won the Good Design & Spark Design Award from the iF RED Dot.

While the old-school rectangular grill-type design of this device must have played its part, we feel that it has won awards because of its unique HEPA filter.

The device uses a specialized antivirus HEPA filter. The HEPA filter is H14 grade but it is green in color because it incorporates parts of sumac trees and Japanese ginkgo leaves.

The company says that the incorporation of these natural substances gives the HEPA filter the ability to destroy protein markers on the surface of viruses. This, in turn, renders the viruses inert.

Other than the HEPA filter, the device also features a pre-filter and a patented urethane carbon filter. The unique nature of the carbon filter and the HEPA filter makes this air purifier very effective which is why it has the ECARF certification to be allergy-friendly.

The HEPA filter, along with the carbon filter, has a life of 8500 hours which amounts to about 10 days short of a whole year. Depending on how much you use your device and how bad the pollution levels are where you live, the filters can last more than one year too.

Another unique design feature of this air purifier from Coway is how the pre-filter is fitted into the device. The cover of the purifier has a cartridge design i.e., a channel where the filters are slid in.

The benefit of this is that you don’t have to extract the dirty pre-filter in your room. You can simply take the cover off and take it to the cleaning area before sliding the filters out.

Coway’s air purifier also boasts of a very good CADR value for a device that is intended for bedrooms and small rooms. Its CADR value exceeds 300 m3 per hour which makes it suitable for a room measuring around 250 sq. ft. in real-world scenarios.

In terms of modes, this device has Auto and Night along with two fan speeds. Other devices tend to have more modes and fan speeds to choose from. The device also boasts of a color-based AQI indicator and a filter replacement indicator. It lacks a child lock too.

Another flaw is that this device has a very short power cord. This can be an annoyance especially if you don’t have the plug point at the right spot or if you want to place the purifier in the middle of the room.

Considering all the design innovations, we found it very surprising that this device is so cheaply priced. It barely made it into our guide and came very close to qualifying for our other guide on the best air purifiers in India under ₹10,000.

Even more amazing is that Coway provides a 2-year general warranty and a 5-year motor warranty. This is better than most other air purifiers in the same price bracket available in the market.

The Z-2000 air purifier is another award-winning device that qualifies for our guide.

It has won the Red Dot Award in 2019 for Product Design. The manufacturing company, TruSens, is based in the US.

The most exceptional quality of this device is the remote SensorPod.

This is essentially a sensor that you can place anywhere in the room.

The sensor will send back information to the device, allowing it to monitor the AQI levels more comprehensively.

Another superb quality of this device is that you can get specialized HEPA filters from the company. Apart from the standard HEPA filter, there are three other options to choose from.

These are Specialty Allergy & Flu, Specialty Odor & VOCs, and Specialty Pet. All the HEPA filters are H14 grade and last for anything between 12 to 15 months. The HEPA filter is easily available but it is a bit on the expensive side.

The HEPA filter forms one level of a 4-level purification system. The other three levels are the pre-filter, the carbon filter, and ultraviolet sterilization. Ultraviolet sterilization is useful because it kills viruses and other microorganisms.

One more design-focused quality of this device is its PureDirect 360-degree DuPont Filtration technology. This technology splits the purified airflow into two separate streams. The company says that this makes this device around 24% more efficient than other similar devices.

This device has a very low CADR value too. With a CADR of 117 m3 per hour, we cannot understand how the company recommends this device for a 375 sq. ft room. At best, and that is only because of its cylindrical design, we think this device would be suitable for rooms measuring between 150 and 200 sq. ft.

In the medium-sized room section of the price segment we’re focusing on, the AC2887 has been India’s best air purifier for an amazingly long period.

The CADR value of this device is just a little higher than what Coway offers.

Philips says that its CADR of 333 m3 per hour makes it suitable for a room measuring upwards of 400 sq. ft.

We think it will probably be better suitable for a room measuring somewhere between 250 sq. ft. and 300 sq. ft.

This makes sense too because the company says that this device will take about 10 minutes to completely purify the air of a room with an area of 216 sq. ft. That, remember, is only in ideal conditions.

All Philips air purifiers are based on passive purification i.e., filters. This one boasts a pre-filter, a carbon filter, and a HEPA filter of H14 grade. The replacement filters are easily and affordably available for all Philips air purifiers. You’ll even have access to aftermarket suppliers online for replacement filters if you want to save money.

It also has a very accurate AQI indicator that uses both numbers and colors to convey the state of the room’s air. The indicator is based on the company’s Vitashield Intelligent technology and ties in directly to the Auto mode in the device.

Sharp tried something different with its FP-GM50E-B air purifier.

It added a mosquito catcher function and called it the “world’s first air purifier with 100% chemical-free mosquito trapping function”.

Unfortunately, while the gimmick is interesting, it isn’t groundbreaking enough to make this device the best in the segment.

The mosquito catcher function of this device is based on multiple factors.

The first is the black body of the device which is supposed to be more attractive to mosquitos and pull them towards the unit.

The next is the ultraviolet light function that is again supposed to attract mosquitos into the unit.

The third is a sticky or gluey sheet inside the device that is supposed to trap the mosquito.

The mosquito catching function could’ve made a huge difference in how popular this device is in India if it had worked flawlessly. In other words, if you have mosquitos in your room, it will pull some of them in while the others will still be free.

Unfortunately, it feels like a cool but gimmicky add-on rather than a gamechanger. The air purifier, otherwise, is like all Sharp devices i.e., super effective. It uses both passive and active purification technologies.

Passively, this device uses a combi-filter that incorporates a pre-filter, an activated carbon filter, and an H14 grade HEPA filter. The entire combi-filter is supposed to last around two years depending on how much you use the device or how bad the pollution is in your location.

The replacement filter will be expensive but since it lasts so long, the cost evens out. The replacement filters are easily available from the company.

You won’t know when to change the filter because there’s no filter change alert. Instead, you’ll have to keep track of time or wait for the technician to tell you during a service.

When it comes to active purification, this device uses Sharp’s patented ionization technology. The uniqueness of the technology prevents ozone production.

Instead of only negative ions, the device releases both negative and positive ions. As a result, the device produces water molecules as opposed to ozone molecules. The company calls the technology Plasmacluster.

The ionization technology comes into play in Haze mode. This mode is intended for high pollution days. Other available modes are High, Medium, and Low.

The device also has the usual dust and odor sensor that is connected to its air quality indicator. The air quality indicator, unfortunately, is only color-coded and doesn’t show actual numerical AQI values.

The CADR of this device is just over 300 m3 per hour. This, according to us, is best suited to a room measuring about 250 sq. ft. However, the company gives 430 sq. ft. as the Brand Recommended Room Size for this device.

We think this is because of two things – ionization and the 20° airflow technologies. The ionization technology augments the purification abilities of this device just like the improved airflow.

However, we feel that even with these two technologies 430 sq. ft. is a bit too optimistic. At most, we think this device would be suitable for 300 to 350 sq. ft. rooms provided you take care of most of the leakages.

The addition of the patented ionization technology and the mosquito catcher means that this is an expensive device. It comes with only a 1-year warranty as against 2-year warranties offered by other brands.

Who’s it for: If you have a major mosquito problem in your home and want an air purifier that can take care of that problem too, get this one from Sharp.

#3: Honeywell Air Touch HAC35M1101W Room Air Purifier

This is the main reason why the air purifiers from the two brands are often alike.

The Air Touch HAC35M1101W air purifier from Honeywell, for example, is very similar to the AC2887 air purifier we’ve already reviewed from Philips.

It has a CADR value of 300 m3 per hour which makes it suitable for a room measuring somewhere between 250 sq. ft. and 300 sq. ft.

The company says it will be good for a 450 sq. ft. room but we don’t think that is the case unless you completely seal leakages. The only reason we think it can be appropriate for a 300 sq. ft. room is its 3D airflow design.

This device uses a 3-stage filtration system that includes a pre-filter, a patented HiSiv filter, and a HEPA filter. The HiSiv filter is unique to Honeywell and features a honeycomb design which makes it particularly effective against odors, gases, and VOCs.

One of the greatest flaws of this device is that its HEPA filter is only H11 grade. This is significantly low especially since the industry has now started using H14 grade HEPA filters.

The company also specifies that its filters have a life of approximately 3000 hours. This amounts to over four months of non-stop use. If you don’t use it all the time, your filters should last anywhere between 6 and 12 months depending on how bad the pollution levels are.

This is much lower than what other brands are offering. What makes it worse is that Honeywell’s replacement filters are expensive too. The device will tell you when the filters need to be replaced.

In terms of using the device, the features are helpful. The device has Auto and Silent modes. You use one for hands-off usage and the other at night. The Auto mode depends on the pollution sensor in the air purifier which displays its findings through a color-based indicator.

There’s a child lock but the device doesn’t have the timer function. Another flaw of this device is that it doesn’t turn on automatically after a power cut. This can be quite annoying as you’ll have to get up and turn it on every time you have a cut.

One thing that sets this device apart from its competitors is that it is available in two colors. You can get it in Champagne Gold or plain White.

Philips has been making the top air purifiers in India for a very long time now.

However, when Xiaomi released their Mi Air Purifier 3, it became a serious challenger.

The reason wasn’t that the Mi air purifier was better than the Philips air purifier in terms of core functions (far from it in fact).

The reason was that the Mi device came with WIFI, app, and voice compatibility. This was a function that Philips air purifiers didn’t possess.

However, Philips is trying to change all that with the AC2958/63 air purifier. Like the more recent models from other brands, this one not only supports WIFI connectivity and app control but also voice compatibility through Google Voice Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

This device also has a greater CADR than other models from the company which means that it is suitable for larger rooms. Its CADR is 380 which makes it fit for rooms with a floor area of about 300 sq. ft to 350 sq. ft. However, that estimate is made without incorporating the cylindrical design of this device.

Most air purifiers from Philips are cuboidal and flat with intake vents towards the front and sides and expulsion vents at the top. This device is different. Its cylindrical design means that it takes in air from all around instead of just two directions.

The air is still expelled at the top but the fact that it is cylindrical means that you’ll be putting it away from walls. This will result in better circulation. This would be significant enough for it to be effective in another 50 sq. ft. making it suitable for rooms measuring somewhere between 350 sq. ft. and 400 sq. ft.

The filter configuration inside this device is also different. It has a combi-filter system that incorporates three layers. These are the pre-filter, the activated charcoal filter, and the NanoProtect HEPA filter. Fancy names aside, the HEPA filter is H13 grade.

Like all air purifiers from Philips, the filter life of this one is also impressive and slightly better than its competitors. The company says that its filter can last up to 3 years. Replacement filters, of course, are easily available too.

All the convenience-focused features that you usually find in Philips air purifiers are present in this model too. This includes the intelligent Auto mode that changes fan speeds according to what the AQI indicator tells it and the light sensor that brings on the Sleep mode when the light levels go down in the room.

The AQI indicator is also very useful since it shows the monitor’s results in color and numeric values. Additionally, there are the Gentle and Turbo modes along with three fan speeds.

Being one of the most advanced products from Philips suitable for larger rooms, this air purifier is a bit on the expensive side. However, since Philips air purifiers are quite reliable and long-lasting, we’re not too worried about the extra cost. #2: Havells Freshia AP-46 85-Watt Air Purifier with Remote

Havells is coming into the air purifier market in a big way.

The only problem is that they’re only on their way and haven’t fully arrived yet.

We say this because even though their air purifiers are superb, the post-sales support they provide on their products is poor.

This is most evident by the fact that replacement filters for their devices aren’t easily available.

Countless buyers have complained that they’ve been unable to get replacement filters even after pursuing company professionals up the hierarchical chain over many weeks.

If Havells were to fix replacement filter availability, they would end up taking a huge chunk of the air purifiers market in the country.

As to why we think this device is so good, the answer is the fact that it is loaded with features at a significantly lower price than its competitors. There are even features that aren’t available with competitors such as the remote.

The CADR of this device is also pretty high at 388 m3 per hour. This means that it can handle a room measuring about 300 sq. ft. to 350 sq. ft. The company claims 495 sq. ft. but that claim wouldn’t hold water in real-world conditions.

In terms of its core purpose, this device boasts a 7-stage filtration system. These stages are pre-filter, cold catalyst, activated carbon, antibacterial, HEPA (H13 grade only), UV, and anion.

Pre-filters are for PM10 and bigger dust particles, cold catalyst filters are for dealing with VOCs and harmful gases, activated carbon filters take care of odors, antibacterial filters kill microbes, and HEPA filters are for PM2.5 pollution.

The ultraviolet sterilization supports the antibacterial filter’s work by killing viruses and bacteria while the anion function deals with PM10, PM2.5, and microorganisms.

#3: Lasko A554IN Electrostatic Air Purifier

The A554IN from Lasko is unique in the Indian market.

It is different from all other air purifiers because it uses an electrostatic field to purify the air in your room.

In simple terms, this device uses a charged field between metallic plates to trap pollutants in the air.

The plates are stainless steel and create the electrostatic field because of an ionizer wire.

Incidentally, in case you didn’t know, an electrostatic field is just the space between two differently charged surfaces. Because of the difference in charges of the two surfaces, electrons travel between the plates.

The fan in this device sucks in the air in your room. This sucked-in air goes through this electrostatic field, where electrons stick to the pollutants, charge them, and push them towards the oppositely charged plates.

Uniqueness aside, you’re probably wondering why you should consider buying this device over other more conventional air purifiers in the market. You should if you don’t want the hassle of changing filters every few months.

You see, after the metal plates are saturated with pollutants, an alert on the display panel lights up. When this happens, you’re supposed to remove the filters and wash them in the bathroom. Once dry, you simply put them back into the device. The company says that the filters will not need to be replaced for 10 years!

The most important downside of this device is the same as any ionizing air purifier i.e., it produces ozone. While the device boasts an ozone emission removal filter, we’re not sure how effective it is. Whether you buy this device or not will depend on your beliefs and preferences about ozone production by ionizers.

In terms of capacity, the company says that this device’s CADR of 350 m3 per hour is good enough for a room measuring 550 sq. ft. Realistically, however, it is a better fit for a room measuring around 300 sq. ft. to 350 sq. ft.

The CADR value of this purifier comes through four different fans. You’ll even get 10 different fan speeds to choose from. Having this ability is important too because, at higher speeds, this device can get quite noisy.

While not needing to change filters is a huge advantage to have, this device has considerable flaws in addition to ozone production too.

For instance, it doesn’t come with any AQI indicator which can make it difficult to decide whether it is working properly or not. Further, the post-sales service of this device is suspect.

Lasko is a very old company (100 years) but it primarily operates in the US. They have zero presence in India. To provide their service, they’re relying on local distributors.

These distributors are unable to provide the kind of quality and speed of service that bigger companies in the industry can. Therefore, even the 3-year on-site motor warranty doesn’t mean much in practice.

On the flip side, this is an incredibly cheap device. It is also pretty simple which means that a local electrician should be able to fix it if it does break down.

Another flaw of this air purifier is that it doesn’t start automatically after a power cut. This is typical of devices manufactured mainly for western countries. In India where regular power cuts are the norm, this can be a problem.

Who’s it for: If you’re looking for an air purifier that won’t require you to spend money on replacing filters, again and again, get this one from Lasko.

Within this price bracket, this air purifier from Blue Star has the maximum capacity. The BS-AP490LAN air purifier has a massive CADR of 915 m3 per hour.

This is more than double the air purifier with the next highest CADR – Havells with 388 m3 per hour.

The company says that this CADR value means that their device will be able to cope with a room as large as 800 sq. ft.

Again, this would be in ideal conditions so we think, in real-world conditions, it is better if you take this coverage area down to somewhere between 650 sq. ft. and 700 sq. ft. That is still double the coverage area of its competitors.

The quality of purification provided by this device is also great since it has a 7-stage purification system. This includes the usual pre-filter, activated carbon filter, and the HEPA filter along with the cold catalyst filter. The HEPA filter in this device is the latest in the market too i.e., H14 grade.

However, this is where we see the first problem. Replacement filters aren’t easily available. The provided filters last for approximately 1 year and the device will tell you when they need replacing but even if you contact the company, you’ll have trouble finding the filters.

Using the device is super-easy. It boasts of an Auto mode based on what the company calls the SensAir Technology. What this means, however, is that the device monitors the pollution in the room and adjusts the fan speed to cope with it.

The device will also share the AQI levels of your room with you through a color-based and numerical indicator in the control panel.

Other than the Auto mode, this device has a Sleep mode too. Further, the device also has microbe sterilization technology which uses ultraviolet rays to kill off microorganisms of all kinds.

You’ll be able to set the timer as well as lock the controls if you have toddlers in the house. There will even be a remote with the device. However, the remote is broken in the package far more often than we like so we suggest checking it as soon as you receive the package.

Unbelievably, this is an extremely cheap device. It is closer to the ₹10,000 mark than the ₹20,000 limit. It also comes with a 2-year warranty but that warranty isn’t the most useful because of poor post-sales service. If you’re in a big city, you’ll be fine but if you’re in a smaller town then you may not get the service you deserve.

Even the Top Air Purifiers in India are Only as Good as Their Users

There are cavalier and ignorant people out there who will tell you that you don’t need an air purifier because they don’t work. Some will tell you that they’re a gimmick of big companies to get you to spend your hard-earned money.

To back their claims, they’ll say that the AQI indicator of the devices rarely ever show good air in the room and is entirely random and unpredictable. To further muddy the entire thing, they’ll falsely claim that they’ve tested it themselves at home and are speaking from experience.

Here’s the thing: Their personal experiences are right.

They really did try air purifiers at home and its AQI indicator really did seem random and unpredictable. However, this happened because they had no idea how to use their air purifiers.

First, they didn’t keep their doors and windows shut while using their air purifiers. If they did shut their windows and doors, they didn’t seal them with the proper seals.

If you allow dirty, outside air to come into your room regularly, even the most expensive and effective air purifiers will struggle to keep up. As a result, their AQI indicators will constantly shuffle between bad, normal, and good air statuses.

Another common complaint of people is that the air purifier companies are using these devices to get people to spend continuously. To justify this, these people explain how quickly the filters in their air purifiers need to be replaced.

However, it is again neglect and ignorance that are causing this problem. The more you expose your air purifier’s filter to polluted air, the more quickly it will need to be replaced.

These seals aren’t the most expensive and can be purchased easily at any hardware store. However, we recommend measuring your doors before approaching the stores. They’ll cut the seals to the right dimensions and then you can install them yourself or hire a carpenter to do it for you.

The seals we’re talking about are metal strips with brushes at the bottom. You also get seals with rubber strips and all rubber seals online that are much easier to install but also less durable.

They’ve always manufactured excellent products so we’re not that surprised to find that the Havells Freshia AP-20 is good enough to qualify for our guide.

This is the entry-level model from this company which is why it is priced below ₹10,000. However, what you need to know is that it is only barely below the ₹10,000 mark. The other more advanced variants of this same device go as high as ₹19,000.

Even though it is the basic, entry-level model, it is pretty impressive when it comes to its core technology. Unlike many of its competitors, it uses True HEPA technology which essentially means that it has an H13 grade HEPA filter.

In fact, the entire filtration system of this device can be split into five stages which are pre-filter, cold catalyst, activated carbon, antibacterial, and HEPA.

While the entry-level nature of this device doesn’t affect its purification functionalities, it does affect how quickly it performs those functions.

For instance, the CADR value of this device is 180 m3 per hour which the company says is good enough for a room spanning 215 square feet. This makes it suitable for smaller rooms like the usual bedrooms.

Another exceptional quality of this device is that it comes with a remote control. The remote control is pretty useful, especially since the company categorically says that this device is ideal for bedrooms.

In fact, it is highly likely that you already own a Kent RO or alkaline water purifier since water pollution and hardness in the country are no less problematic than air pollution.

The air purifier from the company, though, is also good enough to feature in our list of the 10 best air purifiers in India under ₹10,000.

It is best suited for smaller rooms because of its 180 m3 per hour CADR. The company’s recommended room size of 290 sq. ft., however, is a bit on the optimistic side. If your room is around the 200 sq. ft. mark then this product may be a good choice for you.

Similarly, the company also inflates its filter life when it comes to marketing. It says that its filters will either last for 7 months or 2,000 hours. Just for perspective, if you run your purifier for 24 hours (as you should), 2,000 hours would amount to less than 3 months.

Compare that with the 7-month claim and you’ll see the problem. At the same time, if your usage falls within the average usage metrics then 7 months sound about right.

In peak pollution, if you run this device round the clock, you shouldn’t expect any more than 3 months. Replacing the entire filter set, by the way, will cost you around ₹3,000. This is fairly standard in the industry.

In terms of how well it purifies the air, we have no complaints. This device features an H13 grade HEPA filter which is the standard with most air purifiers these days. The market is only now seeing the entry of H14 grade HEPA filters and for most people, H13 should be good enough.

Other than the HEPA filter, this device also features the pre-filter for catching dust and the activated carbon filter for capturing gases and odors. There’s even an inbuilt ionizer to supplement this barrier-based purification technology.

However, we’ll leave a warning here. This is the traditional ionization technology which means that it can cause ozone accumulation in your room.

The default setting of the ionizer in this device is “on” whether you turn the device on for the first time or whether it restarts after a power cut. Therefore, if you don’t want the ionization option, you’ll have to turn it off manually every time the device restarts.

Beurer is a German company that has only recently entered the Indian market. The 660.02 LR200 is their smallest air purifier which is why they market it as a “compact air purifier”.

This device uses a 3-stage filtration system which comprises a pre-filter, an activated carbon filter, and an EPA filter. For all intents and purposes, an EPA filter can be seen as a HEPA filter.

EPA just stands for Efficient Particulate Absorbent filters instead of High-Efficiency Particulate Absorbent or HEPA because its purification efficiency is lower. This device uses an EPA12 filter which can be translated into an H12 grade HEPA filter in terms of how efficiently it purifies the air.

The barrier-based passive purification in this device is supplemented by the ionization function as in the case of Kent’s offering. The ionizer, however, can cause ozone accumulation in your room.

What is strange about this device is that it only boasts a CADR of 120 m3 per hour but claims to be suitable for a 300 sq. ft. room. We think this is an exaggeration in the same vein as Kent but the fact that it uses an EPA filter instead of a HEPA filter may be one explanation.

In terms of features, it is comparable again. It boasts a night mode, 3 fan speeds, a timer, and filter alarms. If you want more features, there are other considerably more powerful variants also available but they don’t fit within our chosen price segment.

As a result, instead of making ozone, these ions end up making water molecules in the room. Effectively, this air purifier’s ionization technology also helps with humidification. This unique ionization technology is so good that Sharp has gotten certification from 30 global laboratories including IIT Delhi and the British Allergy Foundation.

The Plasmacluster technology in this device is supported by the typical passive purification of filters. This device uses a combination filter comprising elements for pre-filter, activated carbon filter, and HEPA filter.

The HEPA filter used in this air purifier is H14 grade. Because the combi-filter makes use of an H14 grade HEPA filter, it ends up costing twice as much as the filters of competing devices. On the other hand, this costing makes sense because the company says that its combi-filter will last for 24 months.

Another major issue with this device is that it doesn’t come with any filter change indicator. We think this is a major oversight from the designers of this device.

It doesn’t even matter which price segment or room size you consider. Philips’ devices beat all their competitors very comfortably.

Take this AC1215/20 air purifier for example.

If you set aside their ultra-small portable air purifier, this device is their entry-level offering and one of the best in the market in terms of all areas of concern.

It not only purifies the air well and offers numerous features but also does it without requiring you to spend loads of money on replacement filters.

It has a CADR value of 270 m3 per hour which is good enough for a room just over 200 sq. ft. The company, though, says that it will be able to purify a room as large as 333 sq. ft. but we think for that to happen you’ll need to not only seal the room properly but also use the device in a period of relatively low pollution levels.

To illustrate their device’s capabilities, Philips says that this air purifier will be able to purify a room measuring 18 ft. x 12 ft. x 8 ft. in less than 12 minutes.

The device uses a 4-stage filtration system that comprises a pre-filter, an activated carbon filter, and a double-layered True HEPA H13 grade filter.

The nature of the HEPA filter in an air purifier is its most important variable. In this device, the filter ensures multiple things. The first is that it purifies the air well, resulting in a certification from the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation or ECARF.

The second is that it lasts longer than what is seen in competing products. While the company doesn’t make any claims, you won’t have to change your filter for a minimum of six months. If the pollution levels are lower or you use the device lesser, then it can even last for the whole year.

You don’t have to worry about it, though. The device will tell you when it’s time to change the HEPA filter. It will even tell you when you need to clean the pre-filter with a different error code.

The NightSense mode allows the device to sense the level of light in the room and turn off the display. Further, when you turn it on, the device will try to purify as much of the room as possible within the next 15 minutes before reducing its fan speed to make the least amount of noise.

At different points in the night, the device may ramp up purification and sound for small periods but this is only to cope with increasing pollution in the room. The NightSense mode is the main reason why this device is so exceptional. The mode works well even though it has one flaw. It is erratic about sensing the light in the room and doesn’t turn off like it’s supposed to.

Other than these modes, you’ll also have the option to manually choose from four different fan speeds. There’s also a child lock for homes with fiddle-some toddlers.

Honeywell’s HC000017/AP/V2 Air Touch air purifier is very similar to the Philips device we’ve reviewed above.

It has a similar CADR and even the same kind of air filtration system along with similar features.

The only difference is the status of the company in the country. While Philips is the market leader, Honeywell is not, at least in home air purifiers.

However, Honeywell’s air purifier is good too. While its CADR of 250 m3 per hour is lower than the 270 m3 per hour CADR of the previously reviewed Philips’s air purifier, Honeywell still claims that its device is suitable for a considerably bigger room of 387.5 sq. ft.

We’re sure that they’re citing the maximum possible figure here and don’t believe it at all. We think this device’s range is the same as a room between 200 and 250 sq. ft.

At the same time, we believe Honeywell when they say that their device is fast enough to change the air in most rooms five times every hour. Their air filtration system comprises the standard pre-filter and activated carbon filter along with the H13 grade HEPA filter.

Even the filter life claimed by the company is similar to what we specified while reviewing Philips’s product earlier i.e., 1 year. Honeywell goes one step ahead and also says 3,000 hours, which amounts to about 4 months of non-stop 24-hour operation.

On average, though, we’ll say that 6 months to 1 year is what you should expect if you use your purifier a lot. You’ll get a filter change alert from the device as soon as its filter needs replacing.

The device has the right features too. It has 2 air purifying speeds and an auto mode. The auto mode senses the state of the air in the room and adjusts the speed with which the device purifies it. This mode, however, is quite irregular, finicky, and unpredictable in its behavior.

Other than the annoying auto mode, the biggest flaw of this air purifier is that it becomes noisier the older it gets. This is despite the company’s claim that this device’s sound output never exceeds 50 dB.

There’s also a sleep mode and automatic shut-off timer options. These are 1, 2, 4, and 8 hours.

Amazon’s strategy of taking the best aspects of various products in a market segment, stuffing them all into their own product, and then offering the finished article at throwaway prices is very impressive.

They’ve perfected this strategy to a point where it is, frankly, quite ridiculous. Take the AB_2020_AP1 air purifier sold under the AmazonBasics brand.

In this case, the eCommerce giant has not only made sure that its product has the best features in the market but has actually improved upon those capabilities.

For instance, this device has the greatest CADR in the industry within this price bracket. Naturally, the highest CADR means that this device can be used in larger rooms. With a CADR of 360 m3 per hour, you can expect this air purifier to be sufficient even if your room spans around 300 to 350 sq. ft. even though the company claims 462.8 sq. ft.

The quality of air it provides is better too since it has a 5-stage filtration system highlighted by an H14 grade HEPA filter. H14 grade HEPA filters are new to the Indian market and only three devices within this price bracket are offering them. Other than the earlier reviewed Sharp air purifier and this one from AmazonBasics, there’s only the Eureka Forbes air purifier.

The only problem is that this product doesn’t have the same support ecosystem that market leaders boast of. The biggest example of this is that you’ll have an incredibly difficult time finding replacement filters for this device.

Even contacting Amazon’s famed customer support wouldn’t help in that regard, although the product is supported by a 1-year guarantee.

In terms of usage again, Amazon has ensured that its air purifier has all the modes and options that the best products in the industry boast.

There are two working modes including the automatic mode that modifies fan speed based on air pollution in the room. The automatic mode relies on the device’s inbuilt monitor function that shows air quality in three colors.

The Mi AC-M6-SC Air Purifier 3 is special because it comes with complete WIFI compatibility.

This means that you can download the Mi app and control your air purifier from anywhere in the house.

Additionally, it also means that your air purifier now responds to voice commands directed through either Amazon’s Alexa or Google’s Voice Assistant.

Therefore, if you have Amazon Echo Dot or Google’s Home device, you can order your air purifier from anywhere in your home without lifting even a finger. There’s even an air purifier and echo dot combo available.

While the biggest strength of this device is its connective superiority, it also happens to be one of its flaws. The reason for this is that setting it all up can get a little complicated for people who are not technologically savvy.

The trick is to have both the air purifier and the smartphone or tablet on the same WIFI network. Once this is done, you can download the app and it should show your new air purifier in the interface.

The company has been diversifying in recent years which is how we have the Aeroguard AP 700 air purifier. This device isn’t far from being the best product in the industry either.

The only thing stopping it from being that is that the manufacturer hasn’t committed to it to the same extent that other market leaders like Philips have committed to theirs.

The best example of this is the fact that the company’s post-sales service is poor and replacement filters are not easily available for this device. Therefore, while you’ll get an awesome product when you pull the trigger on this air purifier, all that awesomeness will only last till the first thing goes wrong or the filters get clogged.

As to why, we think this is such a great standalone product, let us explain.

Eureka Forbes says that this is a great product because it comes with the Complete Disease Protection system. Translation: this product has a 6-stage filtration process.
